News Surge: Samson Mow, Checkmate and the $85,000 Dip

The March 3, 2025 episode set Bitcoin's dip against a production-cost post, then argued Samson Mow and Checkmate could both be right on manipulation.

The Mining Disrupt News Surge for Monday, March 3, 2025 opened three weeks out from the Mining Disrupt Expo in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, set for March 25 through 27. The host said the election that hung over the previous year was now behind the industry and its results were playing out in real time. The states were leading the way, he said, and Utah was one step away from enacting Bitcoin laws. Then came his standing disclaimer: the show is entertainment and education, and no financial advice.

A dip at $85,000

The numbers segment opened on timechaincalendar.com and a price that had slipped. The host put it at $85,000, called the dip the subject of his opinion section, and said the same figure meant opposite things to different holders.

Depending on who you are that $85,000 represents sadness, loss, pain or an exceptional opportunity. Which camp do you sit in?

Mining Disrupt News Surge host · 1:30

That question ran through the rest of the episode. Each day's post was picked to sit on one side of it or the other.

Who is selling

The first post came from a Bitcoin account on X whose handle the captions garble. It asked who was selling. On chain, it said, most of the movement over the past year had come from coins one to five years old, and it broke holders into short-term, medium-term and long-term groups. The host said on-chain analytics could tell two tales, and held the question for later.

Tuesday's post came from Dr. Profit, who put Bitcoin's production cost at $95,000 against the $85,000 price the show had just looked at. A price below production cost, the post said, has historically been one of the best buying opportunities.

Next were two posts that another account said were the first it saw on opening its feed. One, from Peter Schiff, said Bitcoin was down more than 20%, an official bear market, and that a US strategic reserve established now could look like a Bitcoin bailout fund; Trump, it said, needed to distance himself from Bitcoin because he likes winners, not losers. The other came from Trump's son: buy the dip. The host said he was not sure two takes could be further apart.

Samson Mow's week

Samson Mow appeared through the week. On Wednesday he wrote that the real Bitcoin bull market was about to begin, and that every drawdown brings analysts with a reason prices might go lower. A second post, which the host tied to the saying that time in the market beats timing the market, read:

[Hodlers can hodl] longer than markets can stay irrational, the longer you're in the greater you are rewarded.

On Thursday the first account was back. It wanted to become a Bitcoin whale, so it was not upset by the pullback in the way people might think; it wanted the price to go lower. The host called this the crux of his opinion section: depending on how long someone has held, their mindset has either shifted or it has not. On Friday Mow posted that 1 million is conservative.

Saturday brought a clip of Michael Saylor saying volatility is a gift to the faithful. The host gave his own reading: it scares away the tourists, the lazy, people not willing to look into it, and people who are already conventionally rich.

The week closed with David Marcus, who, the host said, had a little something to do with PayPal. Marcus wrote that sats are to Bitcoin what TCP/IP packets are to data, tiny bits that will eventually move trillions of US dollars a day: the internet did data, and this will do money.

Checkmate and Mow on manipulation

The opinion section turned to a back-and-forth between Mow and Checkmate that the host said he would not dig up on screen. Checkmate, he said, works from the forensic data of the chain itself, is in the weeds like very few people are, and was saying there is no manipulation happening. Mow said there is.

The host's case for Mow rested on reach rather than data. Mow travels on a regular basis, and the host pointed to a post from Hong Kong. Someone who talks to that many people, he said, starts to get an idea of what people are doing.

Is it possible that both Checkmate and Samson [Mow] are both right? I certainly think so.

Mining Disrupt News Surge host · 6:26

He did not mean both could be literally true; manipulation cannot be happening and not happening at once. His point was that it might not be happening in the way Checkmate looks for it. He granted that this was a lot of words for not much data, and said he had asked a chatbot how it could happen and would not accept that every option on its list was off the table.

If you have enough money you can do a lot of things and I don't think that Bitcoin manipulation is off the table.

Mining Disrupt News Surge host · 7:12

On whale manipulation, he asked whether Checkmate could see coins being sold while missing selling done in a way that does not raise too much suspicion, and whether Mow, with an ear to a floor or two that most people lack, could know that this kind of thing happens. The episode gave no data either way. It was the host's argument, and he framed it as one.

The line he left on

He closed on Mow's line about holders outlasting irrational markets. Anyone who understands Bitcoin's fundamentals and has made the mental shift he described, he said, will see a drawdown as an opportunity, not a time to cry.

Then the pitch: three weeks to the Expo, tickets, and an offer to sponsors, down to the coffee cups. A last aside said huge news had broken on Sunday. He would hold his opinion for the next episode, because anything said within 12, 24, even 48 or 72 hours of a story breaking is somewhat reactionary, and he wanted to be more even-headed.

The $85,000 on screen was the price when the host recorded. On March 3, 2025, the episode's date, Bitcoin traded at $92,691; on October 27, 2026 it was $80,631.
