Bitcoin halving countdown
How many blocks are left until the block subsidy halves again, and what it means for mining revenue.
Every halving so far
| Block | Date | Subsidy after |
|---|---|---|
| 0 | 2009-01-03 (genesis) | 50 BTC |
| 210,000 | 2012-11-28 | 25 BTC |
| 420,000 | 2016-07-09 | 12.5 BTC |
| 630,000 | 2020-05-11 | 6.25 BTC |
| 840,000 | 2024-04-20 | 3.125 BTC |
| 1,050,000 | est. April 2028 | 1.5625 BTC |
Why miners plan around it
Today each block pays 3.125 BTC in new coins plus fees (fees are 0.6% of the reward right now). At the next halving the subsidy becomes 1.5625 BTC. At today's hashprice of $39.26/PH/day, the same fleet would gross roughly half that on the day after, all else equal. Operators prepare by moving to more efficient machines, locking in cheaper power, or adding other revenue for the same site.
