Bitcoin Improvement Proposals (BIPs)
Every numbered BIP, what it does, and which ones Bitcoin actually runs.
Every Bitcoin Improvement Proposal with a number, read from the official repository. Status is the repository's own: Deployed (in use), Complete, Draft or Closed.
Start with the most searched
- Taproot (BIPs 340, 341, 342): Schnorr signatures and the 2021 soft fork miners activated with Speedy Trial.
- BIP 39: the 12- and 24-word seed phrase standard, with the full 2,048-word list.
- Drivechain (BIPs 300, 301): sidechains secured by miners' hashrate. Still a draft.
- BIP 110: the 2026 data-limit soft fork that split off a minority chain and failed.
How a soft fork becomes Bitcoin
Consensus changes need the network's agreement. Since 2016 most soft forks have used version bits (BIP 9): miners signal readiness in the block header, and once a set share of blocks in a 2,016-block period signal (95% for SegWit's BIP 9 deployment, 90% for Taproot's Speedy Trial), the rules lock in and activate. Miners do not decide alone: nodes enforce the rules, and a change only sticks if the economy runs software that includes it.

Questions
- What is a BIP?
- A Bitcoin Improvement Proposal: a design document that proposes a change to Bitcoin or a standard for software built on it, from consensus rules to wallet formats.
- How many BIPs are there?
- 213 have numbers in the bitcoin/bips repository as of Oct 12, 2026: 78 Deployed, 57 Closed, 56 Draft, 22 Complete.
- Does a BIP number mean it is part of Bitcoin?
- No. A number only means the proposal is written up and tracked. Consensus BIPs change Bitcoin only if node software implements them and the network activates them.
- Which BIPs did miners activate?
- The best-known soft forks are P2SH (BIP 16, 2012), CHECKLOCKTIMEVERIFY (BIP 65, 2015), CSV (BIPs 68/112/113, 2016), SegWit (BIP 141, 2017) and Taproot (BIPs 340–342, 2021).

Meet the people who build and mine Bitcoin
Soft forks only happen when miners, node operators and developers line up. Mining Disrupt 2027 puts the miners in the room, March 22–24 at the Irving Convention Center, Dallas. Get a pass or exhibit.
