MicroBT's Wright Wang on Hydro, Immersion and a Fixed Rack Shape

MicroBT's sales and marketing director on its US factory, three years of immersion tests and a hydro rack that will keep its shape.

Recorded · Mining Disrupt Miami 2024 · 19 min session

Wright Wang introduced himself to the Mining Disrupt Miami 2024 audience as a chip designer who ended up in sales. Speaking at the June 24–26, 2024 event, MicroBT's sales and marketing director titled his talk around choosing WhatsMiner and used it to walk through what the WhatsMiner maker had built over the previous four years and what it planned next.

He started with the company itself. MicroBT, he said, is a technology-driven company, and almost over 70% of its staff are technical people. Before joining, he worked in complex chip design, and he said he had known MicroBT's founder for almost 20 years; the two worked together on chips for cell phones. When the founder started the business he invited Wang in, first as a partner on the company's first chip, and Wang joined after that chip succeeded. He said he later talked the founder into letting him lead the marketing team, and that he spends much of his time on problems customers bring to the company.

His reason for being on stage was plain. Bitcoin mining, he said, had become more professional and harder than ever, so the company needed to understand what each customer actually requires. He asked the room to tell MicroBT what its criteria were.

A factory in the United States

The first item on his list came from American customers three or four years earlier: they wanted a manufacturing site in the US. Wang said that mattered to them for easier production, for understanding the machines better and for access to repair resources.

He said he and a partner, captioned as Sinos, spent close to two years finding a manufacturer in the US and bringing MicroBT's process and standard operating procedures into it. He described the location only as "very north". MicroBT did the same in Thailand, and he said the company now had three manufacturing sites.

Finally, I think we are the first one who have manufacturers in the US.

Wright Wang · 5:08

He repeated the point a moment later, saying MicroBT was the first to bring manufacturing into the US so that customers could reach the company more easily.

Three years on immersion

The second request, also about three years old, was for new cooling: immersion and hydro, the water-cooled design the captions render as "handry". Wang said immersion is not easy. An operator has to understand what changes compared with air cooling, including how materials react once the hashboards sit in the liquid for a long time.

He said he went to Shell's center in Shanghai and talked to the chief designers of the liquid, put MicroBT's requirements to them, and came away with a recommendation: Shell S3X. Finding a fluid was not the end of it. One partner took units apart and put the separate components into the oil to see what happened under different scenarios, and MicroBT then set up a lab for long-term testing. After three years of that work, Wang said, the company was confident in long-term operation of its immersion products.

A rack shape that will not change

Hydro came about two years before the talk. Wang said it is not a new technology; MicroBT learned it from computer servers, which already have heat-reuse applications. The company held its first showroom in Pennsylvania, presenting its hydro systems for heat recycling as a pilot project.

So you know, we are the first one, choose the rack-based solutions.

Wright Wang · 8:42

He said the rack is a form factor that also fits data center and AI use, and that MicroBT had used the same form factor across three generations. Then he made a promise to the operators in the room.

So we will just commit, we will not change the shape.

Wright Wang · 9:09

The point, he said, was to let customers build their facilities once and run them for the long term.

Shop, repair training and a survey

Wang also listed smaller changes. MicroBT had run an online shop early on but gave it up because of regulations. About two years before the talk, after customers asked for an easy way to buy and to see pricing on the official website, it launched an online shop again.

Because many hydro and immersion miners were going to the US market, he said, MicroBT held its first public repair trainings for free, put training material and videos on its YouTube channel, and planned to launch a customer survey system in the second half of 2024.

Cost, balance and hotter outlets

On what comes next, Wang said customers want lower cost, better sustainability and easier maintenance, but pushing only on cost can hurt long-term operation. MicroBT, he said, tries to find a balance between those requirements.

We need to treat everything, yeah, as investment, not just for a trade.

Wright Wang · 12:32

He said that from 2022 to 2025 MicroBT expected hydro and immersion to become the dominant products, and described three phases. The first was a hydro system aimed at mining alone. The second raised the outlet temperature, because a hotter outlet makes it easier to use the heat. He gave the steps as 150, then 140 to 158, and said that in 2024 the company might raise the tolerance from 158 to 168 (he first said 178, then corrected himself). He did not give a unit.

A hotter outlet, he said, makes it easier to adopt heat recycling for greenhouses, fish farming and building heating.

Partners for the heat side

Wang drew a line around MicroBT's role. As a hardware maker it focuses on the miner side, up to the heat exchanger, and on keeping machines running stably. For the heat applications themselves, he said, MicroBT works with partners, including HECO, that already have that experience, so each side contributes what it knows.

He said MicroBT's partners had worked with the company for three or four years, and he invited others with ideas to test them on MicroBT's resources. As a customer example, he said one operator in the north runs MicroBT's hydro systems at over 30 megawatts on a single site, and that customers' results can be found on their own blogs and social media.

So our object is we never speak by ourselves. We want our product just to tell the stories.

Wright Wang · 17:46

He closed by saying MicroBT's founder planned to attend the next event, and invited questions at the company's booth.

Then and now

When the session was recorded in June 2024, Bitcoin traded at $61,272. On October 16, 2026, it was $82,531.
