Bitcoin Self-Custody: 44,000 Coins Exit Binance

The Mining Disrupt News Surge host reacts to 44,000 Bitcoin leaving Binance in a day, and to a week of news on Lightning, politics and home mining.

Recorded · Mining Disrupt News Surge · 6 min session

On Monday, September 2, 2024, a single data point led the Mining Disrupt News Surge: 44,000 Bitcoin withdrawn from Binance in one day, as posted by Simply Bitcoin. The host framed it as a positive sign for self-custody. On the show, he read the Bitcoin price as $58,014 and joked that the 58K meme was wreaking havoc on every other price. A dollar bought 1,723 sats, fees were low, and he counted 19,560 reachable public nodes.

44,000 Coins Leave the Exchange: The Self-Custody Signal

The host said he always likes it when people take their Bitcoin into self-custody, where they are the ones responsible for their own wealth, money and assets. He called it a beautiful thing to see.

Peter McCormack's New Show

On Wednesday, Peter McCormack, host of the What Bitcoin Did podcast, announced that the show was coming to an end and that his new program, The McCormack Show, would start soon. The host said he expected the new show to keep some Bitcoin anchor but be broader, and that he pictured a format in the style of The Joe Rogan Experience, only hosted by a Bitcoiner. He said he hoped to see somebody get orange-pilled on set.

Lightning Rails for US Dollars

Also on Wednesday, Lightspark, the company headed by former PayPal president David Marcus, announced a way to use the Lightning rails to send US dollars. In the demonstration, a user picked a person, sent a dollar, and the payment arrived in about eight seconds, which the host called pretty cool to see.

The Political Ear: Nicole Shanahan and the Debt Cliff

The host also played a clip from comedian Dave Smith's show featuring Nicole Shanahan, the vice presidential running mate of RFK Jr. In it, Shanahan said the debt problem would force a reckoning, and that every major analyst she had talked to said the country was really, really close. She described the options as some new economic approach, a return to the gold standard, or a Bitcoin standard. The host added that Trump's transition team included RFK Jr., who he said gave one of the best speeches for Bitcoin he had heard from a politician, as well as Tulsi Gabbard, and he called that good news for Bitcoin.

Dell's Silence and the Corporate Dominoes

On Thursday, British HODL asked what would happen if Dell revealed Bitcoin on its balance sheet during that day's earnings call. A few hours later the answer came: Dell had not added Bitcoin to its balance sheet. Yet. The host said that last word was exactly right. He thought the dominoes would fall as time went on, though he allowed that Metaplanet and MicroStrategy might remain the only ones employing that strategy for the foreseeable future.

I think the dominoes will fall as time goes on

Hashrate Anarchy: The Case for Home Miners

The final news item was a Saturday post from Solo Satoshi arguing that every hash matters and that home miners across the globe would collectively hold more power than corporations with overextended debt-based strategies. The host noted that people could get into the project for just over $100, with a five pack for $725, and said buying one for yourself, friends or family would be far more beneficial than scratcher tickets.

The Week's Throughline

The host closed the week by wishing viewers well. His throughline was simple: Bitcoin moving off exchanges and into self-custody, and hashrate moving into homes, were both things he was glad to see. The conversation continues at Mining Disrupt 2027, March 22 to 24 in Irving, Texas. When this session was recorded, Bitcoin traded at $58,417; on October 26, 2026 it was $79,525.
